Faith, Family, and a Second Act: Joe Alusma's Journey From Detective to Founder

Joe Alusma retired from law enforcement in May 2026 to start Alusma Property Media. He says faith and family guided the move from street gang detective to real estate media founder.

Joe Alusma during his law enforcement career

Joe Alusma’s favorite verse is printed in his story as plainly as his business name: “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26). For the founder of Alusma Property Media, those words are not a slogan. They describe the path that carried him from a career in law enforcement, through a serious injury and long recovery, to building a real estate photography and videography company in Southwest Florida.

Rooted in Naples

Alusma was born and raised in Naples, Florida. He is a first-generation Haitian American, a husband, and a father, and he says his life and career are guided by dedication, discipline, and a commitment to excellence. Those roots matter to how he does business. He describes Alusma Property Media as a company built on family, integrity, faith, and service to the community that raised him.

The Season That Tested Him

Before he picked up a camera full time, Alusma spent seven years in law enforcement. In early 2022, while responding to a domestic violence call, he sustained a traumatic injury in the line of duty. The incident left him with multiple severe facial injuries, including a fractured palate and a shattered right orbital floor. Recovery required five surgeries, beginning with major reconstructive surgery, and for two years he struggled with double vision.

He describes that period as one that tested him physically, mentally, and spiritually. “During that season, God became my strength and my source,” he wrote, “shaping and molding me in ways I could not have imagined and deepening my faith through the adversity.”

After his fifth surgery succeeded, Alusma returned to duty and went on to earn a promotion to the street gang unit, where he served as a detective for his final two years on the force. He says he came out of that chapter with a renewed perspective on life, a stronger relationship with God, and an understanding that setbacks do not have to define the future.

Choosing a New Chapter

In May 2026, Alusma retired from law enforcement. He felt in his spirit, he says, that it was time to close that chapter and pursue what God had in store for him next. As a husband and father, he wanted a career that would let him keep providing for his family without putting his life at risk at the expense of his wife and children.

Photography and videography had been passions he pursued on the side throughout his law enforcement career. Alusma Property Media became his chance to turn that passion into a business and, in his words, “build something meaningful for my family, and follow the path I believe God has prepared for me.”

The Work

Today Alusma serves real estate agents, brokers, homeowners, and property professionals across Southwest Florida, including Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, and Fort Myers. His company offers professional HDR photography, cinematic property videos, aerial drone photography, and video content built to help listings stand out. He offers a 24-hour photo turnaround and aims for a smooth, dependable experience from booking to delivery.

In a market where poor visuals can cause a property to be passed over before anyone schedules a showing, he sees his role as helping agents present each home’s best features and communicate its value with confidence.

Building a Legacy

Alusma’s ambitions reach past his own calendar. He plans to expand across Southwest Florida and become a trusted name in real estate media, and eventually to teach and train others to start real estate media businesses of their own. Ultimately, he says, he wants to create a lasting legacy that provides for his family, serves his community, and opens doors for others.

Words for the Next Founder

His advice draws directly from his own story. Trust the process. Stay disciplined. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, even when the future feels uncertain. Treat others with integrity and focus on real value over quick success.

“Sometimes the very thing that pushes you into a new chapter of life,” he wrote, “can become the foundation for something greater than you imagined.”
